Memory vitamins - Check Whats Available

There are many vitamins which are ingredients in supplements marketed as memory vitamins. But the most effective memory vitamin supplement may be one that is not marketed as such. The B vitamins tend to have the greatest memory enhancing effects of all. Memory boosting vitamins may be taken individually or as a multivitamin.

Vitamin B1, also known as thiamin, is perhaps the best memory enhancing vitamin. Vitamin B1's most common dietary source is vitamin fortified breakfast cereals. Blood glucose requires thiamin to produce the substance which transmits messages between nerves. It therefore plays a pivotal role in memory and concentration levels. A thiamin supplement at breakfast time may result in optimal memory funtion in the morning ahead.

Vitamin B2, AKA riboflavin, is found in high concentrations in organ meats. Individuals with poor concentration and those having issues with short-term memory may benefit from a riboflavin supplement. Vitamin B2 is best taken as part of a multivitamin or vitamin B-complex supplement.

A diet severely lacking in Vitamin B3, AKA niacin, may lead to a vitamin deficiency disease known as pellagra. One of the symptoms of pellagra is poor memory Poultry is the main dietary source of niacin.

Liver and poultry are dietary sources of vitamin B12. Those who may benefit from a vitamin B12 supplement include those with memory loss brought on by common diseases of aging.

Though dietary sources of these vitamins are best, with a doctor's OK you may want to consider taking a supplement of one or a combination of the above vitamins if you are concerned about memory issues. These vitamins are sold in department stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, health food stores, fitness centers, mail order catalogs and the internet. Stores like GNC, Rite Aid, CVS and Walmart even carry vitamins sold under their own brand names.
