Daily Nutrition - A Simple Guide
Daily nutrition needs vary with factors such as age, sex, health and daily activity level. Even so everyone requires a daily nutritionally sound diet. The FDA has established minimum daily nutritional requirement guidelines. Though many people's daily diets will need to include more then the minimum amount of nutrients. The FDA recommends daily intakes of at least 6 servings from the grains food/nutrient group. Nutritious choices include rice, pasta and nutrient-fortified cereals. Examples of a serving from this nutrient group are 1 slice bread, 1oz cereal and ½ cup cooked rice/pasta.
Nine daily servings is the FDA's recommendation for the fruits/vegetables nutrient group. Fruits and vegetables are the most nutrient packed foods. Nutrient rich single serving examples include 1 medium apple/banana/orange, 1 cup raw green leafy vegetables, and _ cup fruit/vegetable juice.
Examples of a single serving from the dairy food/nutrient group include 1 cup milk, 1 ½ oz natural cheese and 2oz processed cheese. Cottage cheese and yogurt are other nutritious choices. The FDA recommends at least 2 daily servings
from the dairy group.
FDA daily guidelines suggest 2 servings from the protein group. Meats, peanut butter, eggs, etc. belong to this nutrient group. Nutritious serving size examples here are ½ cup cooked beans, 1/3 cup nuts, and 2-3 oz poultry/fish/lean beef.
Daily nutritional supplements may be indicated for those with consistently poor diets or mal-absorption disorders such as colitis, Crohn's and celiac disease. Nutritional supplements have also been shown to help slow down the aging process, boost the immune system and improve mental functioning.
