Essential Vitamins - What Are They?
Vitamins are essential to good health. Extremely low vitamin levels can lead to vitamin deficiency diseases. Examples of an essential vitamin and its corresponding deficiency disease include: vitamin A - night blindness, vitamin B1 - beriberi, vitamin B3 - pellagra, vitamin C - scurvy, and vitamin D - rickets. Vitamin deficiency diseases are rare in the U.S. nowadays except in hardcore alcoholics and occasionally infants and the elderly. Essential vitamins have innumerable health benefits besides preventing vitamin deficiency diseases.
Vitamins A, B2, B12, C, and E are all essential for maintaining good vision. For example, vitamin A can treat glaucoma, and vitamins B2, C and E can prevent or treat cataracts.
Vitamins essential to maintaining healthy skin include vitamins A, B3, D and H. Vitamins A and B3 may reduce the severity and incidence of acne outbreaks. Vitamins A and D can prevent and/or treat psoriasis. While vitamin B3 alleviates the symptoms of rosacea and vitamin H can alleviate the symptoms of eczema and dermatitis.
Vitamins A, E and folic acid are all essential to alleviating the symptoms of and/or helping prevent cancer. These vitamins have shown to be the most helpful with cervical and lung cancer.
Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid play an essential role in the treatment of mood disorders. Depression sufferers tend to have lower then average levels of vitamins B6 and folic acid. Vitamin B12 relieves persistent irritability.
Heart related conditions are more likely in individuals with lower levels of vitamins B3, E and folic acid. Vitamin B3 helps prevent the buildup of plaque on artery walls. Folic acid may be able to reduce the incidence of fatal heart attacks by 7% in males and 5% in females. While vitamin E may lower the risk of stroke, heart attacks and angina.
